The Maryland Eastern Shore is comprised of nine counties on the Delmarva peninsula. Of these counties, seven include shoreline along the Chesapeake Bay and one borders the Atlantic Ocean. Generally speaking, no matter where you are on the Eastern Shore, you are not far from water.
A majority of boaters who occupy marina slips are not from the Eastern Shore. Many boaters who live in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey choose to boat on the Chesapeake Bay. Most of them keep their boat in Cecil County and Kent County. The choices are abundant on the Northeast River, Elk River, Sassafras River and the town of Rock Hall, as well as other secluded areas.
Boaters from Maryland’s western shore, northern Virginia and the District of Columbia, with access from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, are more apt to dock their boat in Queen Anne’s County or Talbot County. The Kent Narrows, St Michael’s and Oxford are favorite boating locations with many fine marinas.
Further south in Dorchester County, Wicomico County and Somerset County, most boaters are locals and watermen. However, there are a couple towns, Cambridge and Crisfield, that have become popular boater vacation destinations.
For a different kind of boating, there is Ocean City in Worcester County. With several marinas with access to the Atlantic Ocean, Ocean City is Maryland’s off-shore fishing capital.
